David Hellerstein, MD
Curriculum Vita
Education and Training:
He received an A.B. in History
and Literature from Harvard College in 1976 and
an M.D. from Stanford University in 1980. After
completing residency training program in
psychiatry at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical
Center in 1984, and a fellowship in Public
Psychiatry at Columbia Presbyterian Medical
Center-New York State Psychiatric Institute in
1985, he moved to Beth Israel Medical Center in
1985. He is now director of the Outpatient
Psychiatry Division.
Literary Activities and
Consultation
A member of PEN and Authors
Guild, Dr. Hellerstein has been a contributing
editor for Science Digest, 7 Days Magazine, MD
Magazine, and North American Review. He received
the Pushcart Prize award for best essay in 1981,
and several MacDowell Colony fellowships. He has
been consultant to the Public Broadcasting
Systems for its television series, "Managing our
Miracles: Health Care in America," and to Health
Affairs magazine, and is a reviewer for
professional journals including: Pychosomatics,
the American Journal of Psychiatry, and CNS
Drugs. He is currently President of the New York
County District Branch of the American
Psychiatric Association.
Research:
Dr. Hellerstein has served as
investigator, co-principal investigator, or
principal investigator on approximately 15
research grants, which have been funded by the
National Institute of Mental Health, National
Institute of Drug Abuse, and various
pharmaceutical companies. He is currently
involved in research projects on St. John's Wort
in depression; Lamictal (lamotrigine) in manic
depressive illness; Wellbutrin in chronic
depression; combined medication and group
therapy in chronic depression; and the effects
of assertive case management on the care of
patients with coexisting schizophrenia and
substance abuse disorders.
