 ABOUT DR. HELLERSTEIN.
PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES

Dr. Hellerstein  trained in Psychiatry at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center. He is Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at Columbia University Medical Center. He specializes in the treatment of mood and anxiety disorders, with a particular focus on psychopharmacology, or the use of medications to treat psychiatric symptoms.

MAJOR INTERESTS

Chronic depression, manic-depressive illness, postpartum depression, panic disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder. A Distinguished Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, he has served as President of the New York County District Branch of the American Psychiatric Association.

RESEARCH

Dr. Hellerstein is a Research Psychiatrist at the Depression Evaluation Service at Columbia University and the New York State Psychiatric Institute. He founded the Mood Disorders Research Unit at Beth Israel Medical Center in the late 1980s, which subsequently was at St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital for many years.

He has done studies on a wide variety of both established and new treatments for depression, including:

· the treatment of dysthymia (chronic depression),
· the treatment of bipolar depression and bipolar mania,
· the combination of psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy for improving outcome of depression

 
SCIENTIFIC WORK
Dr. Hellerstein has published over 100 articles and book chapters, and over 80 abstracts in scientific journals and professional organizations proceedings. Journals include: American Journal of Psychiatry, Archives of General Psychiatry, Journal of Psychotherapy Practice and Research, Hospital and Community Psychiatry, Journal of Serotonin Research, Progress in Neuropsychopharmacology and Biological Psychiatry, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, and CNS Drugs. Dr. Hellerstein has made many presentations at national and international conferences.

LITERARY ACTIVITIES

Dr. Hellerstein has also received national recognition as a writer, essayist and journalist. His books include his 2011 Heal Your Brain, about integrating neuroscience advances to improve the treatment of depression and anxiety disorders;  Battles of Life and Death (essays about medical training), and A Family of Doctors (a memoir of 5 generations of doctors in one family). His writing has been widely published in literary and popular magazines, and he has contributed chapters to many books, and he has been awarded several MacDowell Colony Fellowships and the Pushcart Prize for Best Essay.

David Hellerstein, MD Curriculum Vita

Education and Training:

He received an A.B. in History and Literature from Harvard College in 1976 and an M.D. from Stanford University in 1980. After completing residency training program in psychiatry at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center in 1984, and a fellowship in Public Psychiatry at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center-New York State Psychiatric Institute in 1985, he moved to Beth Israel Medical Center in 1985. He is now director of the Outpatient Psychiatry Division.

Literary Activities and Consultation

A member of PEN and Authors Guild, Dr. Hellerstein has been a contributing editor for Science Digest, 7 Days Magazine, MD Magazine, and North American Review. He received the Pushcart Prize award for best essay in 1981, and several MacDowell Colony fellowships. He has been consultant to the Public Broadcasting Systems for its television series, "Managing our Miracles: Health Care in America," and to Health Affairs magazine, and is a reviewer for professional journals including: Pychosomatics, the American Journal of Psychiatry, and CNS Drugs. He is currently President of the New York County District Branch of the American Psychiatric Association.

Research:

Dr. Hellerstein has served as investigator, co-principal investigator, or principal investigator on approximately 15 research grants, which have been funded by the National Institute of Mental Health, National Institute of Drug Abuse, and various pharmaceutical companies. He is currently involved in research projects on St. John's Wort in depression; Lamictal (lamotrigine) in manic depressive illness; Wellbutrin in chronic depression; combined medication and group therapy in chronic depression; and the effects of assertive case management on the care of patients with coexisting schizophrenia and substance abuse disorders.
